Introduction

This introductory course on cyanide provides a non-technical introduction to the use and management of cyanide on a global basis, including gold production, cyanide chemistry, analysis, toxicity, treatment, risks, and management. The course is designed to provide the bigger picture of cyanide use and how it compares with other chemicals used around the world.

Cyanide was first used in gold mining in New Zealand and South Africa over a century ago. Cyanidation remains the most efficient means of leaching gold and silver from ores.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) was discovered by the Swedish chemist Carl Scheele in 1782. Much of the fear and misunderstanding surrounding cyanide has to do with its use in executions, as a reagent in chemical warfare, and in incidents such as the Tylenol capsule episode and the mass suicide in Guyana many years ago.

There is much confusion and misinformation regarding the real impact of cyanide use in the gold mining industry. This introductory course attempts to dispel the myths and mysteries surrounding cyanide and provide reliable facts and figures. Subsequent courses on cyanide detail specific technical aspects highlighted in this introductory course.

The course begins with an examination of the production, use and transportation of cyanide worldwide, followed by discussions of its technical properties, risks, and management.

Content

The presentation follows a light, easy-to-read format. The course comprises 5 sessions, each of approximately 60 minutes viewing duration, plus an interactive review that confirms the viewer's achievement of learning objectives. The total duration of the course is approximately five hours.
