Online Remote Learning for the Mining Community
EduMine Newsbrief - March 07 2003

UBC Mining Engineering, UBC Continuing Studies and EduMine are pleased to announce their collaboration on development of unique courses designed to meet the lifelong learning needs of the mining community. Each course integrates an online remote learning component with an intensive two-or-three day campus study component. Completion of required and elective courses leads to a Certificate in Mining Studies from UBC Continuing Studies. A number of such courses will be presented by UBC Mining Engineering at an annual Summer Institute of Mining Studies.
"Busy professionals and members of the mining community can now upgrade their skills by taking the online learning component of a course in their own time and at their own pace - from home, office, mine site or while traveling," says Simon Houlding, a co-founder of EduMine, provider of the online learning component of the courses. "Both cost and time spent away from important revenue-earning assignments are minimized."
"The courses combine the peer review, mentoring and hands-on advantages of a classroom with the flexibility of an online course, providing an accredited learning path and certification from an internationally recognized mining school," adds Malcolm Scoble, Head of UBC Mining Engineering.
"The courses meet both personal and corporate objectives for ongoing professional development for mining industry participants," concludes Diane Kristjansson, Program Leader in Applied Science at UBC Continuing Studies. "We even have the ability to create a tailored corporate program to meet a mining company's needs."
