In this course, trainees learn how to safely and productively operate one of the most versatile pieces of equipment used in both the construction and mining industries—the hydraulic, tracked excavator (backhoe).
- Lesson 1 overviews the excavator's components and dig cycle, working on slopes, the correct bucket position when digging, and also highlights jobsite hazards—both above and underground.
- Lesson 2 introduces several methods for truck loading including box cutting, bench and drive-by loading.
- Lesson 3 covers trench design, cutback methods, and the effect ground conditions may have on trench design, plus a practical three-step process for digging a stable trench.
- Lesson 4 deals with operating skills for lifting loads, including reading lifting capacity charts and safe rigging and lifting techniques.
