Mine Safety: Risk, Reason and Regret

Summary

Participate in an interesting and intriguing look into accidents, incidents, environmental excursions and other events that shape the landscape of risk that industrial enterprises must navigate. Risk assessment, risk perception and risk communication will all be examined within the framework of well known industrial events such as: the Exxon Valdez, the Westray mine disaster, the Sunshine mine disaster, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, the Piper Alpha disaster, the space shuttle disasters and the Titanic. Each case study will be presented by a combination of documentaries, cause and effects summaries and analysis using a new model involving Cognitive Patterning and Boundary Condition and Decision Analysis.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is intended for those in heavy industry who are interested in modelling safety
behaviour or those who are responsible for ensuring compliance with generally accepted industry practices and legislation. Mine management, health, safety and environment professionals, human resources and public affairs officers are encouraged to attend.
