This course will examine the needs of society and commercial entities engaged in mineral production. Well conceived and designed mineral or solid fuel projects exercise a balance between economic prosperity, environmental health, and social equality.
At the end of the course, participants will have a good understanding of the underpinnings of sustainable development and how this concept is viewed in mining operations; they will have a good grounding in the applications of this concept to mining and the contributions that mining makes to sustainable development; and they will understand how to apply the concept at the project, mine and corporate levels.
This course qualifies as formal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity and as credit towards a Certificate in Mining Studies (CMS) from University of British Columbia (UBC).
