This webcast is divided into two sessions presented on November 2 and 3 from 8:00 - 11:00 am Pacific Standard Time with the following topics:

Day 1 – 2nd November 2009

15 minutes Introduction
Profile of delegates. Course objectives.
45 minutes 1.1 Coal: Geology and Classification
Sedimentary setting.  Coalification process, classification, variables (rank and calorific value; moisture, sulphur and ash content).
One hour 1.2 Coal: Evaluation.
Variables and techniques.  Washing plants. Markets. Pricing structure. Revenue assumptions based on quality of coal (bituminous, anthracitic and coking). Seam characteristics, structural orientation and sterilisation in underground mining. South African operations. Reserve and resource definitions.
45 minutes 1.3 Introduction to Surface Mining
Strip mine scheduling exercise. Introduction to IC-CoalEval
15 minutes 1.4 Environmental Impact
Site visits. Impact Assessment, Baseline conditions, impacts and mitigation

 

Day 2 – 3rd November 2009

Time Topic
One and a half hours 2.1 Underground Coal Operation
Justification of an investment in a 200m-Longwall Mining System. .  Capex. Relationship between working conditions, equipment utilisation and opcosts.
One and a half hours 2.2 Surface Coal Operation
Justification of an investment in equipment. Introduction to the EduMine e-Learning module.  Sensitivity analysis.
