Course Summary

Introduction

A variety of sling configurations exist to lift different types of loads. It is important to understand the components, types, configurations, and verification procedures of slings in order to ensure safe operations.

This course aims at improving the skills of people who execute slinging operations. Its main objective is to ensure that the learner is able to use the correct slings and procedures.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • components used when making overhead lifts,
  • visually inspect lifting equipment,
  • signals used to direct a crane operator when making a lift,
  • description of sling configurations used in overhead lifts,
  • lift procedure and safety precautions, and
  • ropes and reeving basics.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize the components used when making overhead lifts.
  • Recognize overhead lifts procedures.
  • Identify the safety precautions (e.g. visual inspections) to be followed when using overhead lifts.
  • Describe the signals used to direct a crane operator during a lift operation.
  • Describe the different sling configurations used in overhead lifts.
  • Determine the load weight of different objects.
  • Explain the basics of wire ropes and reeving.

Recommended Background

  • This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, or conditional monitoring for mining applications.

HumEng International

HumEng provides online courses and assessments for mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, and condition monitoring for applications in mining.

The HumEng mission is to design, develop and implement training solutions that increase operational efficiency and productivity, and to sustain these improvements through training best practices.

The HumEng approach to training is based on skills management. Experience has proven that the acquisition of key skills, and the transfer of these skills to the shop floor, increases a company's competitiveness. This is even truer today, when operations must often rely on fewer employees, due to rationalization or to recruiting challenges.
