Course Summary

Introduction

The reduction of friction between the moving parts of machines is a high priority of industrial maintenance. In addition to reducing friction, proper lubrication can lengthen the useful life of equipment and increase its output, speed up production flow, and reduce the number of bearing failure incidents and, therefore, maintenance costs.

This course covers the theory of friction, different kinds of lubricants, their properties and applications, different methods of lubrication, and solutions to a number of lubrication problems.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • lubrication principles,
  • properties of lubricants,
  • mineral and synthetic oils,
  • greases,
  • dry (solid) lubricants,
  • lubrication methods,
  • sources of contamination or deterioration of lubricants, and
  • suggestions for practical exercises.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the theory of friction.
  • Identify the different kinds of lubricants, their properties, and their applications.
  • Identify the different methods of lubrication.
  • Identify solutions to a number of lubrication problems.

Recommended Background

  • This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, or conditional monitoring for mining applications.

HumEng International

HumEng provides online courses and assessments for mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, and condition monitoring for applications in mining.

The HumEng mission is to design, develop and implement training solutions that increase operational efficiency and productivity, and to sustain these improvements through training best practices.

The HumEng approach to training is based on skills management. Experience has proven that the acquisition of key skills, and the transfer of these skills to the shop floor, increases a company's competitiveness. This is even truer today, when operations must often rely on fewer employees, due to rationalization or to recruiting challenges.
