Handling Materials

Areas of Study: Maintenance

This course covers the different types of lifting and handling devices; how to estimate the weight to be lifted and the capacities of cables and chains; how to lift, move, and set down heavy parts in accordance with safety standards; and the description of lifting, moving and rotation mechanisms and commands, as well as the safety devices associated with each piece of equipment. Edumine and HumEng International are collaborating on the delivery of online courses for mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, and conditional monitoring for mining applications.

Course Summary

Introduction

Maintenance mechanics must be able to estimate the weight of the parts that they have to handle, make sure the capacities of the lifting devices and accessories are not exceeded, signal correctly the different commands used in lifting, and inspect lifting equipment.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • rigging and lifting gear and their uses,
  • types of slings and their uses,
  • overhead travelling hoists,
  • assessment of load weights,
  • sling configurations,
  • standard hand signals,
  • protection of slings,
  • inspection of lifting equipment, and
  • suggestions for practical exercises.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the different types of lifting and handling devices.
  • Estimate the weight to be lifted and the capacities of cables and chains.
  • Apply safety standards to lift, move, and set down heavy parts correctly.
  • Describe lifting mechanisms, movement, direction, rotation, commands, as well as the safety devices associated with each piece of equipment.

Recommended Background

  • This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, or conditional monitoring for mining applications.

HumEng International

HumEng provides online courses and assessments for mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, and condition monitoring for applications in mining.

The HumEng mission is to design, develop and implement training solutions that increase operational efficiency and productivity, and to sustain these improvements through training best practices.

The HumEng approach to training is based on skills management. Experience has proven that the acquisition of key skills, and the transfer of these skills to the shop floor, increases a company's competitiveness. This is even truer today, when operations must often rely on fewer employees, due to rationalization or to recruiting challenges.
