Course Summary

Introduction

Conveyors handle devices that continuously move large quantities of materials from place to place. To avoid injuries and breakages, workers must follow standard handling procedures and make sure conveyors are not set in motion when mechanics are working on them.

This course covers the various types of conveyors, their components and their uses, the methods used to change belts and make a mechanical splice (using fasteners or vulcanization), how to align a conveyor, and how to identify and solve problems involving the operation of conveyors.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • belt and slat conveyors and their uses,
  • chain conveyors and their uses,
  • single-chain conveyors and their uses,
  • causes of failure,
  • inspection and maintenance of conveyors,
  • conveyor-belt alignment, and
  • suggestions for practical exercises.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify the various types of conveyors and list their components and uses.
  • Describe the methods used to change belts and make a mechanical splice (using fasteners or vulcanisation).
  • Recognize how to align a conveyor.
  • Identify/solve problems involving the running of conveyors.

Recommended Background

  • This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, or conditional monitoring for mining applications.

HumEng International

HumEng provides online courses and assessments for mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, and condition monitoring for applications in mining.

The HumEng mission is to design, develop and implement training solutions that increase operational efficiency and productivity, and to sustain these improvements through training best practices.

The HumEng approach to training is based on skills management. Experience has proven that the acquisition of key skills, and the transfer of these skills to the shop floor, increases a company's competitiveness. This is even truer today, when operations must often rely on fewer employees, due to rationalization or to recruiting challenges.
