This course will introduce you to the role culture plays in the beliefs and behaviors of people. We will look at how cultures form, and how they provide both the roadmap and the rules that members must follow. We will use Hofstede's index to see how national cultures differ and how easy it is to go wrong when working with people from other cultures. We will look at occupational cultures and organizational cultures, with the goal of providing you tools to maneuver through the minefield that can easily trip you up. We also introduce a diversity model that will help you deal with the cultural differences in your work team that could be causing conflict.
Leadership Development Series Background
The Leadership Development series was developed for EduMine by Dr. Elaine Cullen, President of Prima Consulting Services, and by Trudy Gallinger, Director of Curriculum Development for Prima Consulting Services. We draw upon a wealth of knowledge and wisdom from those who are thought leaders, practitioners, and professors in the art of leadership. We provide references for the many wise teachers and guides we used to create this series, and hope you will take the time to learn from them as well. How we have put the series together, however, and the unique ways we have presented the material as it relates to the mining industry, is ours alone.
While each course in the series is designed to stand alone, it is highly recommended that you complete the Leadership Development - Introduction to Leadership course. This will ensure that we have a common understanding of what leadership entails, and common language to use in working through the entire course series.
Leadership Development - Leadership, Values, and Culture consists of 4 viewing sessions of 45–60 minutes each with supporting figures, videos, activities, and an interactive course review. Course duration is equivalent to approximately 4 hours of viewing content.
