Summary

EduMine is presenting a webcast on Mine Closure in association with the InfoMine Conference Mine Closure Solutions 2014. The course will draw on and expand the scope of the EduMine online course, Mine Closure: The Basics of Success.

This course is for those who are involved with or responsible for planning or undertaking current or future mine closure. The course covers all aspects of mine closure, from planning, financing, and implementation, to long-term surveillance and maintenance and walkway strategies. The course will introduce the basic ideas and challenges; advance through discussion of the latest financial, technical, and social approaches to mine closure; and end with a series of case histories of mine closure planning and implementation.

Topics to be covered in this course include:

  • Introduction and Basic Concepts of Mine Closure
  • Laws, Regulations and Standards for Mine Closure
  • Post-Closure Mine Use
  • Financing Mine Closure
  • Mine Closure Phases, Planning and Implementation
  • The Engineering of Closure
  • Social Issues of Mine Closure
  • Common Mistakes of Mine Closure

The InfoMine Conference Associated With the Webcast

Mine Closure Solutions 2014 (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 27-30 April 2014) will focus on technology, regulatory issues, transfer of care and custody, closure risks and liability, financing, insurance, social responsibility, community engagement and sustainable development as it affects mine closure. In particular, the conference will consider recent developments in South America regarding mine closure; Peru, Chile and Brazil have changed the closure landscape in South America. Peru is about 2 years into application of closure legislation and initial closure plans have been filed for review. In November 2012 Law 20.551 was approved in Chile, which regulates mine closure for mine sites and installations. Closure legislation has recently been passed in Brazil's Minas Gerais state.

Pre-Course e-Learning

Prior to the course, registered delegates have access to the online e-learning material consisting of an introductory course titled Mine Closure: The Basics of Success.

Certificate in Mining Studies

This course qualifies for one day of short course credit for the Certificate in Mining Studies (CMS), a continuing education program of accredited short courses, webcasts and online courses for lifelong learning in mining, supported by University of British Columbia and University of Arizona. more details »

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Registered participants who attend the entire webcast and complete an evaluation at the end of the course will receive a Certificate of Attendance, confirming the Professional Development Hours (PDH)/Continuing Education Units (CEU) earned. Who Should Attend?

The course is for those interested in and involved in all aspects of mine closure. Given that hot topics from the Mine Closure Solutions 2014 conference will be addressed, this should be particularly interesting to those wanting to keep abreast with recent developments in South American mine closure regulations, and how this is influencing best practice financial, technical, and social approaches to mine closure.
