Summary

Mine-Mill Integration (MMI) encompasses a range of approaches for the integration of novel technologies into the mine to improve the efficiency and profitability of the mineral extraction and beneficiation process. Mine-Mill Integration can involve operational integration, such as the use of drill- and shovel-monitoring technologies, down-the-hole and face-mapping tools, optimization of the blast fragmentation/comminution process, as well as improved process monitoring in the pit and ore handling system. Mine-Mill Integration can also involve the physical integration of waste-rejection technologies such as size classification, sorting or flash flotation into the mine itself, for improved grade control as well as potentially improving ore grades in the feed to the mill. Significant benefits in mine, mill and smelter operations can be enjoyed with correct application of mine-mill approaches for increased overall profitability of the mine.

Background

The term Mine-Mill Integration was fist coined by the Australians in the 1990s. It was defined in terms of approaches used to improve the interface between the mining operation in the pit and the surface mill. Aspects included in this definition include:

  • drill-mill technologies,
  • down the hole sensing,
  • blast fragmentation/comminution optimization, and
  • technology for the interpretation of ore textures in terms of their impact on mineral processing.

Since 1999, Dr. Bamber has been involved in strategic research into Mine-Mill Integration, more specifically research into the integration of mineral processing and waste disposal technologies into the underground and surface mining environment. Aspects included in this body of work include:

  • technologies for improved face mapping and grade control,
  • integration with both selective and bulk mining technologies,
  • innovative ore handling systems,
  • ore grade sensing and control,
  • ore pre-concentration by size classification,
  • sorting, dense media separation, and
  • coarse-particle flotation or gravity methods.

The course describes the comprehensive range of technologies and applications and their respective benefits to the mine developer and operator. Impacts and benefits of the successful implementation of such technologies include inter alia: increased ore extraction, improved metal recoveries, reduced energy and costs, improved concentrate quality and improved smelter operations. An executable impact demonstration tool PreCalculatOre will be demonstrated during the course and provided to all participants.

Pre-Course e-Learning

Prior to the course, registered delegates have access to online e-learning material consisting of two introductory courses titled “Introduction to Mining and Mineral Processing” and "Mine Project Economics".

Certificate in Mining Studies

This course qualifies for one day of short course credit for the Certificate in Mining Studies (CMS), a continuing education program of accredited short courses, webcasts and online courses for lifelong learning in mining, supported by University of British Columbia and University of Arizona. more details »

Dr. Andrew Bamber

Dr. Andrew Bamber is the CEO of MineSense Technologies Ltd of Vancouver, Canada, and focuses on research and development of sensor-based mineral telemetry and ore upgrading systems for a variety of companies. Dr. Bamber has past experience in designing and building mines, having executed several major capital projects in nickel, copper, chrome, platinum and gold in Southern Africa, Kazakhstan, Canada and South America. He was a consultant to Golder's Global Mining Group from 2005 – 2011, and is a qualified person in a range of commodities including nickel, copper, gold and tungsten.

He is also a word class researcher and entrepreneur, having been awarded the Graduate Research Prize at the CIM AGM in 2008, the 2009 Douglas Hays Research Medal for publication of his doctoral work on Mine-Mill Integration, 3rd prize in the BCIC New Ventures Business Competition in 2011, and was runner-up in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (Pacific) Competition in 2013.

Dr. Bamber is currently engaged in ongoing work developing and marketing sensor based ore pre-concentration solutions for Glencore, Vale, Barrick, BHP and other major mining companies.

Cancellations

Notice of cancellation must be given in writing by letter, fax or email and action will be taken to recover, from the delegates or their employers, that portion of the fee owing at the time of cancellation.

If a delegate submits written notice of cancellation 10 or more business days prior to the first day of the webcast, EduMine will refund the cost of the webcast.

If a delegate submits written notice of cancellation prior to the webcast but within 9 business days of the first day of the webcast, EduMine will apply the delegate’s payment less a 10% administration fee towards an EduMine webcast or short course held within one year of the date of cancellation.

If a delegate submits written notice of cancellation after the webcast has started, or misses all or a portion of the webcast without notice, no refund or credit will be granted.

EduMine reserves the right to cancel an advertised course on short notice. It will endeavour to provide participants with as much notice as possible, but will not accept liability for costs incurred by participants or their organisations as a result of the course being cancelled or postponed. If a course is cancelled, fees will be refunded in full. EduMine also reserves the right to postpone or make such alterations to the content of a course as may be necessary.
