UBC Certificate in Mining Studies

Competitiveness and sustainability are making it necessary for companies in the mining industry to put increasing importance on finding a way for their personnel to stay current with new technology and best practices. As a result the concept of Lifelong Learning and the transformation of companies into Learning Organizations has growing relevance in the industry.
Existing professionals require continuing education and professionals from other disciplines coming into mining require cross-training (see the results of the EduMine survey on Requirements for Cross-Training in Mining).

The Norman B. Keevil (NBK) Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia understands the need to change in a changing world and so has undertaken to address this need through a program of Lifelong Learning.

As a first step to achieving this larger goal, the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering has partnered with EduMine and CIM to develop the UBC Certificate in Mining Studies, a combination of online and classroom learning, and the UBC Mining Studies Institute, a block of time during the summer dedicated to short-course learning..

This innovative model of learning uses a flexible approach to continuing education and cross-training of people in the mining industry and related trades. The program combines the convenience of online learning with the mentoring and peer-review benefits of a short-course held in a classroom and then finishes the learning experience by assigning a project to be completed after the short-course.

Each year the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering and others, including EduMine, present classroom courses that qualify for the Certificate of Mining Studies, for more information visit UBC Certificate in Mining Studies - Courses and Points on the NBK Institute of Mining Engineering website.

Benefits

The benefits of this learning model are that it:
  • integrates the benefits of online learning with those of classroom peer review and mentoring
  • minimizes the requirement for time away from the job
  • emphasizes commitment over past education

    The learning model provides:
  • academic accreditation by an internationally recognized and respected university mining department
  • professional accreditation by a leading mining institution
  • a resource for mining corporations to enhance their intellectual capital that can be integrated into EIT (Engineer In Training) programs

  • Criteria

The criteria for a Certificate in Mining Studies include successfully completing the following ...

  • 160 hours of online study, which includes any required online courses with the remainder selected from the five streams listed below (each classroom study day requires a minimum 20 hours of online study)
  • 9 days of classroom study (on average)
  • an assigned project for each course attended

  • Registration

To register for the Certificate in Mining Studies program and for details of the certificate criteria, process and scheduling, visit UBC Certificate in Mining Studies - Registration and Process on the UBC Mining Engineering Lifelong Learning website. You can also register for specific courses in the current program of classroom courses.

    Online Learning Components

The EduMine courses that qualify as online learning components for each of the Mining Certificate streams are identified in the course catalog by the symbol on the right, as well as in the course introductions. Students who wish to participate in the Certificate in Mining Studies program require enrollment in EduMine and certification in each of the selected EduMine courses. Students can complete certification in EduMine courses in the appropriate stream prior to registration in the Mining Certificate program, i.e. credit will be given for online courses already completed.

The qualifying EduMine courses are listed by stream below below. Click on a course title to view the course introduction.

Stream 1 - Mining Methods and Mine Planning
    Stream 2 - Mineral Processing
Stream 3 - Geotechnical and Rock Mechanics
Stream 4 - Mine Management, Risk Assessment, Financial Analysis
Stream 5 - Environment, Social Issues, Health & Safety
